What grind size is right for me?

That depends on your brewing method. There are four grind sizes, we'll go through them in order of coarsest to finest:

Whole Bean
Whole coffee beans. No grind. If you have a grinder at home, this is your best option.

Filter
Coarse grind. Perfect for brewing on filter, Aeropress, Moccamaster, French Press, pour-over and similar low-pressure brewing methods. Generally, a coarse grind gives a lighter, brighter and softer flavour. This will not work for an espresso machine.

Stovetop
Medium grind. Perfect for brewing on stovetop brewers (Bialletti and similar brands). This is also your best pick if you're unsure which grind size is best for you, or you're purchasing for a friend. Generally, a medium grind gives a medium flavour and is versatile across most brewing methods. For lower end home espresso set ups, this could also work.

Espresso
Fine grind. Perfect for brewing on espresso machines. Generally, a fine grind gives a deeper and bolder flavour. High end espresso set ups may still find this too coarse.

How fresh is Kua coffee?

Very. We roast weekly in Mornington and ship to order. No stale shelf coffee here.

How long does Kua coffee stay fresh?

Technically, coffee is safe to consume for months to years after it is roasted. It's not harmful to consume months-old coffee when kept dry, however flavour does diminish over time.

We recommend drinking your Kua coffee around 10 days post roast date, but within four weeks for optimum flavour. After four weeks not much happens to coffee stored well until the around the 3 month mark, where flavours can become lack lustre. Store your coffee in an airtight container, away from heat and light to maintain its freshness. With ground coffee, the best flavour is within the first 7 days, and we highly recommend drinking within 2 weeks.

Can you compost Kua packaging?

Whilst once our packaging was 100% compostable, we found out FOGO council green waste would remove all paper packaging, even if it was compostable. Understandably they only wanted nutrient rich compostables for their compost. In an effort to save our packaging from landfill, we opted for 100% kerbside recyclable bags instead. When faced with single use items, we wanted them to be as cyclical as possible.

Of course all our coffee is still 100% compostable. In fact, after brewing we highly recommend it! It’s great for gardens, super rich in Nitrogen and a natural pest deterrent.

Here's what arrives with a Kua order and how to dispose of it:

Kua bag - kerbside paper and cardboard
Kua coffee - compost
Box - compost or kerbside paper and cardboard
Packing slip and shipping label - compost or kerbside paper and cardboard

How does your spent coffee grounds collection work?

We partner with Reground, a social enterprise that collects used coffee grounds and diverts them from landfill. Instead of rotting in a bin and releasing methane, your spent grounds are picked up and turned into compost for local gardens, farms, and community projects.

Is Kua a charity?

Not quite — Kua is a social enterprise. We’re purpose-driven, but we’re not a standard charity.

Kua Coffee is a subsidiary of the Commonfolk Group (ABN 48 152 399 936), a for-profit business and certified B Corp.

We also directly support The Cup That Counts (ABN 84 667 626 977), our registered charity. It exists to support a coffee industry that’s fair for everyone involved. $1 from every kilo of Kua coffee helps fund its work.

This hybrid structure is a bit unique, and that’s the point. It allows us to operate like a business but hold ourselves to the integrity standards of a charity.

Our structure is something we are very proud of. If you have questions or ideas, please get in touch.

Where’s the Kua office?

Kua’s home base is the Commonfolk Group HQ at 16 Progress Street, Mornington on Bunurong Country. It’s our shared hub, and you’ll usually find one of the Kua crew here. The rest of the team works remotely from across the country.

Where does Kua roast its coffee?

All our coffee is roasted, packed, and shipped from the Commonfolk Roastery, just next door at 14 Progress Street, Mornington, Victoria.

Where does Kua’s coffee come from?

We source our beans through long-term partnerships with producers who share our values. Right now, that includes:

Mount Elgon, Uganda
Chiapas, Mexico
São Paulo, Brazil

So where is Kua?

In businesses and homes across Australia!
